Explanation

NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft imaged dunes in the southern highlands of Mars. Their repeated shapes record interactions between loose material, wind and surrounding topography.

Color method

This is a visible-light THEMIS observation. Its contrast makes the dune field and the shallow remains of an older crater easier to separate.

Why it matters

Texture can suggest a process, but scale and instrument metadata are needed before assigning a location or material.
